Since 1997, the Louisiana Living History Project continues to be a favorite tradition of Christmas, New Orleans Style. Under the auspices of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, costumed characters from Louisiana history return in tableaux to French Quarter streets, public markets, hotel lobbies and a variety of historic locations, entertaining while also educating visitors and locals with tales and songs from their times. They tell their individual stories, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the Historic Characters as real people. See our Roster of Historic Characters.

The Louisiana Living History Project are not merely actors in costume. These multiple Big Easy Theatre award-winning actors become the people they portray and create intimate street theatre. They never break character while on duty. Each actor researches historical information to incorporate into daily conversation. They learn from historians and local docents of historic homes and museums in the French Quarter. The actors receive training on architectural and social history of the French Quarter to convey a "a day in the life" of Creoles, Americans, and Free People of Color (Gens de Couleur Libres) of various classes. They also sing period holiday tunes. Watch us online!

For Christmas, New Orleans Style, produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc., the Historic Characters appear weekends in December and at special events by request. They stroll Chartres and Royal streets to Jackson Square and the French Market. They visit historic homes, museums, restaurants and hotel lobbies including the Ritz Carlton, Royal Sonesta, Omni Royal Orleans, Marriott Hotel, Bourbon Chateau, Bourbon Orleans and Canal Place. On Christmas Day in Jackson Square, they greet people in front of St. Louis Cathedral.

Gloria Powers is the Company Manager for the Louisiana Living History Project. Contact Gloria to book Historic Characters for your event, any time of year! Historic Characters are available for bookings for special events, receptions, and promotions. As historians themselves, the Historic Characters are knowledgeable and entertaining speakers or hosts.
